Description
Today's turtle is the Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle. All these turtles will headline my Audubon's Birthday event along with some new birds (that will start seeing next week).
It is endemic to the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawajima, Kumejima, and Tokashikijima) in Japan. Due to its rarity and very attractive appearance, this species is highly coveted by turtle collectors worldwide. It listed as highly "Endangered" in the wild. Its threats are habitat destruction and illegal collection for the pet trade. In 1975, the species was designated a National Natural Monument of Japan, which means trading and captive maintenance is strictly regulated by law. There are no established conservation measures for this species. Japan regards captive populations outside of Japan as illegally sourced.
