Description
The day before departure the Flying Cloud was towed out to the middle of the East River and anchored there. Early the next morning the passengers were ferried out to the ship and boarded. Captain Creesy then gave the order, “Brace all aback forward and all full aft for the starboard tack! Heave free the anchor!” The passage officially starts when the anchor breaks the surface of the water. So on June 2nd, 1851, the maiden voyage of the Flying Cloud began.
