Not sure if you intended it but this very strongly says Dickens to me. Particularly That Guy who was infamous for being a tightwad that couldn't get anyone to work for him who wasn't absolutely desperate. Though I'm pretty sure that Bob wasn't some kind of a mythical sea critter.
