Here's the latest in my "how big were they" series. The Ankylosaurus, famously armoured and carrying a massive club on the end of the tail. Like Tyrannosaurus the Ankylosaurus became a species with a family of dinosaurs named after it, the ankylosaurs. The Ankylosaurus was probably the largest of the ankylosaurs and from examining the muscle-attachment points on the skeleton it is thought that it could swing the club on its tail hard enough to break the ankle and leg bones of even a Tyrannosaurus. So attacking it was a perilous exercise for hungry predators, and sneaking up behind it, the usual best tactic with other creatures, was particularly dangerous. It is thought that the Ankylosaurus generally moved slowly but was capable of short bursts of fast energetic movement to make use of the tail club. Skulls reveal a smaller than average brain case for a dinosaur of its size, so they were not intelligent, and their beak and teeth were best adapted for munching on low-growing plants.
