Description
.... Before I can do much here. One look at this image will tell you why. On top of all the other crap I'm dealing with at the moment....
It seems my main rendering machine (and the machine I do about 95% of my business stuff on) has been infected with a particularly nasty virus. It's called "Bundler:Win32/CandyOpen" and it has reduced the useful performance of this computer to something approximately equal to a brick. It's a paper-weight and not much else right now. I'm using one of the other machines to post this.
In researching this, it appears to be a pretty nasty thing to try and get rid of. I've found a couple videos on how to remove it, and will probably spend the rest of today fighting with it. It hides itself deep in the guts of Windows (10 in this case), and if you don't do everything just right, in the right order, pray to the right gods, and so on, so forth, the damn thing will just rise from the dead and re-infect the computer - back to square one. I'll fight with it today and maybe tomorrow, and if I can't seem to make any progress, I guess I'll just have to disconnect everything and drag the computer over to Microcenter and spend more $$$.
So... Thank You very much to whatever asshat sent me this gift for my birthday. If I knew where they lived, I'd probably get myself arrested for displaying my gratitude with a few pounds of C4....
Hope everyone is having a better week out there. Stay safe (and scan your computer often...)

Aww man, that sucks! First step - always disconnect that computer from your WiFi network & internet. I could probably help with this a bit, Sir Rod.
Found a quick tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qif9idIoylw
The only way to remove it is in SAFE Mode. I never got the virus but I'd give this video tutorial a go.
Deepest condolences!!!
LOL! 32,000 files in 2.96Gb should take about 15 -18 minutes, Windows is messin' with ya
I'm going back to painting my basement lol, but I'll keep an eye on the email, send me a sitemail if you need help with the removal process.
Best of Luck, my friend!
Hey, Rick!
Thanks for the input, bro! You shall be an Honorary Member of the TNA Team! 😁 Yeah, I saw that video last night, and once this backup is done, I'm gonna put the laptop here on the desk, and go through all the steps in that video - in safe mode of course! It does look like it covers everything - I sure hope so! I have a lot better things to do.. LOL
I thought retirement was supposed to be FUN! 🤔😬😫
Have fun painting! I need to do that, too...
Are we going to turn this into a chat room again, my friend? LOL! Good to see you, Marius! (HUGS)
Hugs Rick, luv ya but Rod is on fire, trust me
Damn.... I don't get this much action when I post a naked chick! 🤣😂
Mucho THANKS, Rick and Marius! You guys rock!
And now, it's showtime. Hope to be back soon....
read what I said Rod
Hey, guys! I think I got the little bugger... I followed the steps in that video, and even though I had a couple little quirks, the virus was gone when I just did a scan. I'm keeping my eyes on things, and will for a few days, but the performance and file transfer speed is back where it should be! I'm a happy camper (which is much better than a crappy hamper...).
Marius, I'm going to look into that emsisoft app you mentioned as well. I need to take a more defensive stance apparently,
Thanks to both of you! You Rock! 😁😁👍👍
Don't be lazy, just do it.
Andy was very accurate when she said 'deepest condolences' because that was the only chance your pc had...
LOL.. Lazy? Me? Just because I sleep 'till noon? 😂
Yeah, I'm going to be a lot more aggressive re: viruses after this. I've been pretty lucky in a couple ways: I've really not had much of a problem with viruses despite the amount of time I'm on-line. And having friends like you and Rick to cover my backside when the poo hits the fan. 😁👍👍
dang nab ain't that the chit my friend. hop you get this resolved my friend.
Wow, that's rough. I'm afraid that, with my computer knowledge, all I can do is wish you good luck.
There are some really nasty buggers out there ...
I'm very sorry for what happened to your PC, I hope you can eliminate this damned virus. I wish you my sincere best wishes 🙋♂️👍😔
Hope your making headway in getting your computer fixed. It is always a headache when technology is not working as it should. Then to have nasty people in the world creating viruses just to make your life even more difficult is just pure evil.
So Sorry to hear this Rod. Hoping your computer gets well soon
Glad you got to the bottom of it Rod! You deserve a couple of "rest" days after all that hard work!
Man that sucks Rod! Maybe once the virus is gone and everything is safe just do a complete backup unto an external drive?
Hey, everyone! Thanks so much for all the encouragement and support! You all rock!
I used the video at the link Rick sent above, and got rid of the nasty little bugger! It must have pissed some people off, because I had a bunch of SPAMs show up in my spam folder. Sorry, y'all - you'll have to get your Bitcoins somewhere else! LOL
Today's scan shows an "All Clear!" Doing that daily now. And yes, I have EVERYTHING backed up on multiple externals. I have a shelf full of hard drives, and 3 USB docks that they can be inserted into. All my photos, graphics, runtimes, TNA stuff, etc. is backed up and safe from those wastes of human DNA known as 'hackers.'
am I too late for a bandAid ?
LOL! More like a back-brace!.... 🤣 It's been quite a week, and we're only halfway through it!
That picture looks like one of those satirical ones back with W95 or so. You could see a progress bar at 99% and the "estimated time left" was at 179d(!!). And someone had written below that: "In which century was that transfer started?". LOL Congratulations that you managed to get rid of that nonsense without any data loss!! The time loss with hoping and fearing is bitter enough. And besides ... for those guys creating such sh.t I had already my own ideas as well of how to get rid of them in a subtle way. Maybe I can manage to making a readable story from that. Have a good rest for the rest of the day. (hmm, sleeping 'til noon sounds great LOL )
I've seen it all before in a previous job I worked. Usually the "nuclear" option is the only option, so long as the data files are on a separate volume.
I like the nuclear option. It's easy and you get a fresh machine.
Not a good thing, especially on your birthday (Happy Birthday by the way...21 again :)
Glad to see through reading the comments that you seemed to have resolve the problem (fingers crossed)
Life has no understanding of the word retirement, just the good and bads it throws at you always.
Glad thats resolved...
Computers have a mind of their own, we never know. This year I experienced a total loss of disk C (when I changed the video card it was too close and heated up), thankfully I had a fairly recent backup (disk image). And the files/projects disk was not affected.
Since then I've doubled my attention with backups, I use a script that copies only what has changed, this way it does it faster, so I can have it more frequently (the down side is that if I need to use it there's a lot of duplicated stuff, I need to improve this)..
