I'd like to entertain another possibility: the dodo is a thought form, taken out of the gentleman's mind and given tangible shape. Certainly the gentleman's clothing gives the impression that he's a practitioner of Yoga; he may then be surprised at what he can now achieve with his newly acquired mental powers. :)
