You have to watch your fingers with this type - I had an old 'Arab' that used to get me now and again. My later British Thompson had auto feed; had it for about 50 years; still running when I retired and gave it away.
That's neat! Yeah, you definitely wouldn't want to get your fingers stuck in there, ouch!
