Description

in 1947. Thereafter, the work of various research groups will make it possible to realize that the structure of graphene just like its properties are not unique and depend on its synthesis/extraction (detailed in the Production section). Graphene could only be isolated and characterized in 2004 by the group of Andre Geim, from the physics department of the University of Manchester, who received for this, with Konstantin Novoselov, the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 The theoretical structure of graphene has been identified as the basic structural element of other allotropic forms, such as graphite, carbon nanotubes (cylindrical shape) and fullerenes (spherical shape). The main qualities on which research in materials science/chemistry in Europe is centered are its very good electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity (up to 5,300 W m−1 K−1), its mechanical resistance, flexibility, optical transparency and its molecular impermeability.
The stability of graphene is explained by sp2 orbital hybridization – a combination of s, px and py t orbitals that make up the σ bond. The pz electron constitutes the π 5 bond. The π bonds hybridize together to form the π band and the π ∗ bands. These bands are responsible for most of the notable electronic properties of graphene, via the half-filled band that allows electrons to move freely.
