Now days you just need to push a button My father served in the 8th on AA guns I don't think he ever got over it
Ah, yes, advancements in technology :) Wow. How long did he serve?
He was there for the whole of WW11. he lied about his age to join up. When the war was over, they did not need all those men, so it was back to being a good boy
Oh wow, I know that there were a number of soldiers that lied to join up, but I can't imagine how hard it must be to go to war, then come back and adjust to civilian life again
While this is a smaller caliber version I am unfamiliar, disappearing guns were used in coastal defense batteries. The logic is they are below the nap of earth and hard for ships at sea to range in on. Raised into firing position the recoil drops them out of sight for reloading.
Yes! There are a few different places that used them for coastal defence. It's a pretty neat design.
The main Disappearing Gun is a lot bigger. This one is more likely a closer gun to defend the battery. I am thinking they found an restorable gun (Possibly the Philippines) and mounted it. Maybe Battery Stephens on US West Coast.
You're probably right. Didn't see the real guns in person, but saw the old bases for them, and they were huge.
