Description
I loaded a set that I had never used into Poser: The Loft by P3DA. It loaded as a black box. I tried driving the camera through the wall, but everything turned a light tan. I found some cameras for this product so I loaded one of those and I was inside and I could see. Then I added L'homme and some clothes. Then the fun began. I tried adding a pose to get me started. The pose worked, but a plane also got added at an angle and L'homme was posed on that plane. Not what I wanted. Tried deleting the plane. But couldn't select it. Finally figured out is was a ground plane. Hid it. But when I then tried to move L'homme, everything moved as though it was one. Scratching my head, I was about to give up and trash the scene. But then I thought maybe L'homme got parented to the set. Checked and he was parented to the universe. Not sure what it was suppose to be, because I had never checked. Moved on. Couldn't tell what the Loft was parented to, but I tired parenting it to the universe and that worked. Next there was an HDRI included with the Loft, so I load it. Couldn't see how it could work because the Loft loaded as a black box with no side open. But I tried a test render and this is what I got. Interesting how everything is shaded black except L'homme and his shoes. His shirt looked white in the preview. So not sure how any of this worked, but I thought it had an interesting look considering!

It kinda sounds like The Loft loaded into your Poser scene as a scene file (PZ3), rather than a prop (PP2) or figure (CR2)? I've run across some sets that were saved as CR2 or PP2 files but that are actually PZ3 files with the extension changed, and those tend to mess up all kinds of things when you "add" them to a scene (rather than using the library's "replace" option).
As for why L'Homme ended up parented to a ground plane, that's pretty odd, esp. since the default "Ground" in Poser 11 and 12 is a construct (enclosed dome), not a ground plane. You're right that he (and the prop set) should've been parented to the universe as a starting point.
Re: the HDR, if you put an HDR image on an IBL light in Poser and render without IDL enabled, it will add environmental light to an interior scene. If you prefer to use IDL instead for your environmental lighting and put the HDR on an environment sphere prop, it will contribute some light to an interior (esp. through a window) but not much b/c of ambient occlusion. Either way, you should also use an infinite light w/ shadows on as a sun and perhaps a point light or two for lamps or other interior lighting. I've also put HDR images on a one-sided plane and positioned that inside an interior to use for lighting with IDL enabled (just make sure the plane is set to not cast shadows or show in the render, only to be visible to raytracing and act as an emitter, in the plane's property settings). That may not be "correct," but it works :-)
Regardless of the issues you had with setup, you got an interesting result, and his expression conveys your frustration!
PS: You can also set up a light that will only be visible in Preview mode, if you need more light to see what you're doing. I use an infinite light w/o shadows for that and changed the diffuse and specular color chips to black in the material room.

i myself have some issues with certain props that do gray or darkness, hard to avoid. super creaton yo did.

This mystery is why I don't even try to use superfly or any of the fancy iray or idl or whatever else lighting. I just keep things as simple as can be. Usually only two lights. Outside I have one as the sun with shading checked and the other one as just fill lighting. Can't get my head around all these other fancy options so I just go with what I know. LOL! Glad you shared your 'mystery' with us here though! It gives others a chance to share their knowledge with the community! Great stuff! Bravo!

Very emotional image. His expression is so sad. Well the image turned out beautiful. So do what Perpetualrevision says, she seems to know what she is talking about. LOL. I don't After all these years with posers, I'm still just winging it and really have no idea what I'm doing. Would have been totally at a loss if the same stuff happened to me that you described here. :)

perpetualrevision may be on to something. Also, contact the vendor if possible. Some are quite responsive when their products act up. This one will probably be a do-over but that's just fine.
