I hadn't thought about that sentiment for a long time. That's the sort of thing my husband and I were saying when we were in College in the late 60s. Thank you for sharing your work, Ute.

On your war images:
You've posted quite a few powerful war images. All of them are very powerful, and poignant too. This image is typical---although it doesn't have children in it, nor broken-hearted civilians (I'll comment on some of those too). This is about soldiers. The tank is terrifying---a sight that must terrify Europeans, because of the memory of 2 world wars, and many other battles in the 20th C. And it must bring back memories of Soviet tanks rolling into Czechoslovakia or Hungary....Your image is shrouded in "the fog of war"---literally, gray smoke and fog, from weapons, bombs, and crumbling buildings...And you show gutted buildings...architectural skeletons...the aftermath of bombing raids.
I assume that these images strike deep chords in all older Europeans. Some older people forget what Europe looked like right after WWII. And young people don't even learn. Great cities were rubble...bare brick "frames" left everywhere. Debris, rubble, dust. And the dreadful search for bodies. But younger people also don't know that there was massive disease after WWII: cholera, dysentery, malaria, etc. Parts of Europe looked like the apocalypse. So seeing Putin's invasion of Ukraine must be terrifying to all of you. I wish Americans would study history more, and realize how serious this is. Some Americans do, but some don't. If Americans studied war more, maybe it wouldn't wage it as often...
Your wargame images are powerful reminders that war is no game. It doesn't give us "winners" and "losers". No one wins in in war, no one. A powerful image. And those towers are like great, tall cities gutted and emptied, where nothing is left but bricks....Powerful work, Ute.
