Description

This image is for you dear Joe, I hope you like it !?! Prime example of the tragic ballad, no wonder this song has lasted for centuries. May it once again remain unforgotten for so long. The ancient legend of Hero and Leander (see above) is found in the songs of many peoples. In the German-speaking world, the "two royal children" were and are often sung. The melody dates from the 18th century. The composer and lyricist are not known. This song is said to be a legend about "Hero and Leander" from ancient Greece, here the lovers are separated by waters. The first complete tradition in Germany dates back to 1563. Here is the short English version: Two royal children Once upon a time there was a prince and a princess - they loved each other so much, They could not possess each other, - too deep was the water clear. "Oh dear heart, can't you swim over here, my darling, swim over to me, I'll light two candles, don't be afraid, by their light you'll see the way. A wicked fairy heard her intention and pretended to be fast asleep, She blew out the candles and condemned the prince to drown in the depths. It was on a Sunday morning, the people were merry and gay, except for the Princess, who was weeping that day with tears in her red eyes. Oh mother, dearest mother, my head feels as if it is split in two; I would like to go for a walk somewhere else, perhaps by the blue water. The mother went to church alone, the daughter ran to the shore, She walked until she found a fisherman. Oh fisherman, dear fisherman: "Do you want to earn a big prize? Thy net in the water today can - Fish me a prince where he lies." He cast the net into the water, to the bottom, so deep did it sink, He fished a long time for the king's daughter, then he brought the prince to shore. The fisherman fished for a long time until he found the dead prince. Now look here, my dear maiden, here is your prince caught in my net. What does she pull from her finger - a ring of gold so red. Look here, my dear fisherman - buy bread for your children. What takes she from her head hair - her royal crown so gold. Look here, my sweet fisherman - it is the reward for your bold deed. Her two arms entwined his body and she kissed his cold, pale lips, Oh lips, could you but speak to me - my heart would be well again. She wrapped her robe around herself and then jumped into the depths of the sea. Dear father, dear mother, I have found it - my grave you will never see. The bells they rang were heard throughout the land, of woe and distress, loud cries, Two royal children lay close together, both will never rise again. I thank you for looking and wish you a nice evening!

Each of us are islands, floating in space, with perhaps a bridge at times connecting us... I expect, back in earlier times, a melody would transcend many stories... remaining as echos of our lives.

This is an amazing interpretation of the ancient Hero and Leander myth. (I didn't realize that Deutschland had its own version. It's not surprising, considering the very rich tradition of folklore from the Germanic lands and culture...) You've interpreted the tragic tale with this beautiful set of rocks---three little lands---suspended over the ocean. Hero's spot is balanced by a rock on the other end of that huge bridge. But Leander's rock is suspended in mid air! I've never seen the tale interpreted this way. It's beautifiul. And there are flowers on Hero's and Leander's rocks. And the bridge is beautiful too, as are the lanterns on both sides of the bridge. By putting Leander on that suspended rock, it's like he's halfway to heaven. It keeps their love alive in a new, mystical realm. And your sky seems to be a mixture of dawn and sunset. A beautiful interpretation of the myth, Ute. Very touching and uplifting.
