One of the Underground Shamans
In our world the amazing ability of birds that can shape human words with their voices is controlled in the syrinx. Word sounds are shaped by the complex action of muscles deep in the throat and chest - not by the action of lips, jaw, tongue, or tongue against teeth.
The syrinx is similar to the gizzard, another internal muscle set that does a bird’s “chewing” inside the body, since teeth-weight has been eliminated to facilitate better aerodynamics.
The vocalization sounds of dolphins in our world come out of the blowhole in the top of the head and are shaped and pitched internally in a similar manner. Each dolphin expresses its unique personal name, in a series of tones, a musical expression, emitted from the blowhole. This expression is known as the signature whistle. Some researchers have witnessed a mimicking or repeating of human words, also expressed through the blowhole.
The inhabitants of this Shaman’s world have similar internal structures that shape their languages, which involve complex primarily vowel-shaped, intricately-pitched tones, combined with seemingly infinitely-varied patterns of soft rhythmic clicking. In these Beings, it is muscle tone and dexterity in these muscular structures that determines the range of an individual’s vocabulary.

You are a gifted storyteller and the characters you create in your images are always intriguing.
Wonderful description, it evokes all kinds of things for me: one, actual bird calls and their variety; and two, the inner sounds of all creatures, and what they might 'say'. (I have a special feel for bird songs because I studied them years ago--your description brought all that back. They're amazing.) You relate those inner voice-mechanisms to inner sounds, I mean soul-deep sounds that carry glimpses into our innermost natures. The ancient hindus considered mantras as not just syllables for meditation, but structures which capture the rhythms of life itself; thus there were mantras for fire, mantras for light, mantras for love, etc---sounds that carried the very structure of fire and light themselves, kind of like auditory dna's...you evoke those worlds in your description. And I love how you include birds with your shaman (in your image)---in shocking pinks, against her stark black turtleneck. Love the contrast! You have those red-pinks in her head gear too, and her eye rouge, in the leaves, etc...and you place her in front of a medieval village--with turrets, hight towers, etc--to evoke an age of spiritual search. Your sky is bands of olive-tinted waves (beautiful) which cross her head at her neck, her ears and her crown...and her probiscus is like a huge horn through which she creates those fundamental sounds. (If you've ever heard a cow 'moo' closeup, you know how deep the sound is: One thinks that the cow is speaking from some way-distant world.) Your words and image are fodder for tales and wonder. Mark Twain once said that Wagner's operas were "not as bad as they sound". Your image suggests that these sounds are much greater than they sound. Wonderful job as always, Rose.
