Description

Free interpretation of part of Dante's journey to Paradise as narrated in the "Divine Comedy". Beatrice accompanies Dante here and explains to him that the Empyrean (tenth heaven) is the heavenly Jerusalem where the chosen souls are citizens, even if the end of time is near and few are destined to enter it (the seat of Emperor Arrigo VII of Luxembourg, who died in 1313, is ready and a crown is placed on it.

I remember a little bit about Arrigo...He made himself emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, didn't he? (I have one quote in my old, old notes: "Dell' alto arrigo, ch’a drizzare Italia/Verrà in prima ch’ella sia disposta." I have no idea which work of Dante it comes from, but I know it speaks of Arrigo coming to Italy before Italy was ready. That's the only note I have on him---mi dispiace! But I don't remember his role in the Comedia.)

In any case: This is gorgeous, Giuliano! What a tall, bursting image you created! (And it must be seen full-size.) Those tall pillars are gorgeous, and you place the "chosen souls" inside them, as if they've been there for a long time, preparing themselves for entry to the highest realms. And you render them naked, in your yellow-bronze tones. (They look like they're preparing themselves to be reborn.) Also, the pillars have long rays in them---those tall vertical lines that shoot up through the pillars. And the pillars continue back into the image, as far as the eye can see...

I assume that's Beatrice in the center---in radiant, quiet blues. Beautiful patterns on her body, and beautiful marble-like wings. (Alabastro.) And you have no sky, which means that these pillars dominate everything: The feeling I get from this is that the highest level is just beyond our sight, and these souls are almost there---they've almost reached it. Another brilliant vision to accompany Dante's masterpiece. (I have actually started reading it again, because of your posts.) Beautiful...it feels like souls blooming out of ages of sleep, ready to be redeemed...
