ohhhh, glorious. I loved it when you first posted it, and I like that you said it was for Valentine's Day yet also for every day of the year. Barb (bakapo) points out all the hearts in it: I saw some, but after reading her comment, I noticed a lot more. The sun picks up the shapes of the giraffe, and both have organic heart shapes growing all through them.

The sky is luscious, you have rays shooting out the upper left, and like a quiet sun-flare in the upper right. The area around the sun is like things must look in the actual vicinity of the sun---it, it's lit up, radiating in beautiful dark yellows, deep oranges, deep ochres and touches of purples, etc, with a white band around the sun. The sun itself---filled with hearts---isn't the usual yellow, but an earthen yellow, a deep dark tan yellow, like a burnt yellow, implying that sun rose out of earth (rather than the other way around). Primal, mythical Africa. (And if you've ever seen the fabric dyes they have in some African countries, you've seen such hues: They have dyes in Africa unlike any I've seen in the world: Deep saturated yellows and oranges and greens...nothing like it anywhere.) The space around the sun undulates and swirls: Its heat waves remolds space itself. (That's a common trait in your work: ie, the way your main subjects reshapes and vibrates the space around them.)

The giraffes exude a deep honey-yellow, with wonderful browns. And while you capture real giraffe faces, you managed to get a smile on them---without losing the real faces. (Ie, it didn't become a cartoon---which would be fine, but it wouldn't fit a painting as deep as this.) I love the expression on the male giraffe. I have to assume that your animal painting has brought you very close to the spirit of the animals you paint: You must feel a little like a shape-shifter when you do these. The yellows are deep and rich, and the undulating intertwining lines/shapes of the two giraffes make a huge pulsing tapestry. You also did subtle outlining of the 2 giraffes---a small gray line around both---which I think is uncharacteristic of a lot of your animal painting: It makes this a painting and a graphic: The way they stand out from their backgrounds makes this a gigantic card and poster (for V.Day), as well as a painting.

Then (yesssss) you fill the bottom with a big confluence of primal flowers and leaves. The African Daisy always struck me as a 'usual' daisy dressed up for a street fair: It's got all that deep coloration. And your daisies here have deep saturated hues. (Well you have one daisy which is yellow---the kind Van Gogh would've painted. And it's a powerful accent---with a glorious crimson/purple tinged one below it.) (Hard to find proper terms for your colors.) But the leaves and sunflowers are so primal and folded, they show a kind of timeless age. And you have some with rust-red-browns, almost slate reds, mixed with greens. The combo is stunning. The leaves fold over like tinsel or foil, they have real life in their shapes......That bottom layer is as primal as your sun. It's a big, saturated, deep orange/yellow/red tome, and it has a cartoonish glee, and it's a beautiful way to celebrate love. Terrific.

Mark, thank you for your delightful comment. These two kind of goofy looking love-struck giraffes are celebrating a feeling that penetrates their beings all the way into their spots. It isn't easy to turn spots into hearts, for fill a moon with them, but love can do almost anything. Love is a very big, very serious thing to celebrate, and what better way than with these two. He is one happy dude giving his mate a flower, and she is filled with an inner joy to be receiving a daisy from the giraffe of her dreams. I've received such a flower in my day and I can tell you the memory blooms forever.
