The Nakajima A6M2-N "Rufe" fighting-floatplane ,based on the successful Mitsubishi A6M "Zero", was introduced into service with the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942 .Envisioned as aerial defense for amphibious operations and for remote bases, it was used very effectively, among other missions, to harass allied PT boats at night by dropping illuminating flares in their proximity, making them vulnerable to IJN destoyer gun batteries. The "Rufe" was used extensively as an interceptor, fighter-bomber, and close-range recon aircraft in the Pacific Theater, finishing its career defending the Japanese mainland at the end of the war.
