Wow, Jock, I was gonna take a break and come back for this later, but I couldn't wait. I love this! This is flatter than a lot of your paintings---literally: This looks like it's almost made of cutouts, like a collage, and the effect is an in-our-face montage of movable parts, as if the jazz made every square inch of your painting dance. Check out those lonnng fingers, with long dark shadows...and the horns have your usual sheen, but they're more stylized, like you made them from cutouts. This looks like the very best of the great album covers for jazz albums in the 50s and 60s (an art lost with the CD), and, at the same time, an abstract painting of jazz artists at work. Terrific. And you zero in on hands and horns---boom. As an old jazz pianist, I love this.
