Le site, sur les bords d'un cours d'eau, le Bruant, enchâssé entre deux falaises, fut de tout temps choisi par l'homme. Sous le château actuel, se trouvent des grottes dont le mobilier préhistorique montre qu'elles étaient habitées à l'époque moustérienne (- 120 000 ans), aurignacienne (- 40 000 ans) et magdalénienne(- 10 000 ans). En d'autres endroits de la forêt qui entoure cette demeure, subsistent : là, l'enceinte d'un village gallo-romain, ici des tombes mérovingiennes et, bien avant l'actuel logis, des restes de murs du XIe siècle : le lieu porte alors le nom de Romette. The site, on the banks of a stream, the Bruant, set between two cliffs, has always been chosen by man. Underneath the current castle are caves whose prehistoric furniture shows that they were inhabited during the Mousterian (- 120,000 years), Aurignacian (- 40,000 years) and Magdalenian (- 10,000 years) periods. In other parts of the forest surrounding this residence, there remain: there, the enclosure of a Gallo-Roman village, here Merovingian tombs and, well before the present dwelling, remains of 11th century walls: the place then bears the name of Romette.
