Description
“The Major Sahib wishes to know his fortune, yes?”
I felt my eyebrows knit into a frown, one that spread as I took in the young girl’s déshabillé.
Saloni was reputed to be a thousand years old, or at least as old as the ramshackle house she occupied. I was glad I was spared the sight of her like this at least.
The licentious creature before me grinned disarmingly before licking her lips, either out of habit, or nervousness. I surmised her to be a servant; one no doubt daunted by the presence of a British uniform.
“I wish to see Saloni Memsahib, your mistress,” I said reassuringly in the local dialect.
“Here is my card. Please let her know Lieutenant Lawrence wishes, err... wishes to have his fortune told.”
“ I’m Saloni Major Lawrence. Please, do come in.”
“You? Your Saloni Memsahib? But, but, I was told you were... errr...”
“Old! Indeed I am Major. Though not quite as old as Methuselah, I assure you.”
“No, no, quite the contrary," I spluttered in confusion. It’s just Lieutenant by the way, not Major.”
“Ah! But you will become Major following your Kafiristan venture.”
“What! How can you know about that? The expedition is all hush-hush,” I blurted, my voice quickly falling to a whisper — but I found myself whispering to empty space.
Intrigued, and somewhat alarmed, I followed the heady aroma of musk and sandalwood left in Saloni's departing wake.
