Description

After almost six months of operation and four hundred trillion proton-proton collisions, the 2011 LHC proton run ended on Sunday evening at 17:15. For the second year in a row, the LHC team exceeded its operational objectives, steadily increasing the pace at which the LHC delivered data to experiments, announces a press release from the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
"At the end of this year's proton run, the LHC has reached cruising speed," said Steve Myers, director of accelerators and technology at CERN. To put it in perspective, the current rate of data production is 4 million times higher than that recorded during the first operating period of 2010, and 30 times higher than that recorded in early 2011. "
"2011 was a remarkable and exciting year for the entire LHC scientific community (...). We have performed a considerable number of Standard Model measurements and have crossed previously unexplored territories in search of new physics. In particular, we have managed to circumscribe the Higgs boson in the lower part of the mass range in which it is likely to be, said Fabiola Gianotti, spokesperson for the ATLAS experiment. This is where theorists and experimenters expected it to be, but this area is the most difficult to study. "
In the coming days and weeks, the LHC Experiment teams will be analyzing all of the 2011 data to get even closer to a new physics. As in 2010, the LHC is now preparing for four weeks of operation with lead ions.
