A magnificent white lion, bathed in the radiant light of Africa, surveys his kingdom, with a white lion spirit filling the sky. This artwork pays tribute to the rare and endangered White Lion, where they are born in the wild in only one place in the world, in the sacred nature reserve of Timbavati, in South Africa. what a contrast from the hyacinth painting to this; yet they both have 'you' all over them. First, your palette here is delectable: A deep amber-gold-sepia-burnt-orange hue, given in many variations. Even rust hues...And the whites in the sky---as well as on the lion---are like cream and mist. As you do in a number of your animal portraits, you have the spirit of the lion peering from the sky as well (via eyes and hints of his head). And the mountains are beautifully painted on, in simple broad strokes and whispers of paint...
In this piece, the lion seems almost a bas relief: This comes from your shadow around many of his edges---a very effective use of shadow to make him seem like a relief, or like a carved lion placed upon this landscape. (Even a bit of wedgewood here...) Every so often, you get these graphic effects, like actual ceramic, or textile, etc; which are so different from your more flowing paintings. I love how he stands apart here, every so slightly; like you want him to be both a part of that mythic background, but also a wee bit separate. The combination is done seamlessly.
And those rust-gold-amber hues are beautiful in the grasses, land-lines, etc. And the hues under his belly are like discolorations on copper plates: a beautiful metallic array, which seems to 'rain down' from his body. I always find many small sections in your paintings which are alive with many hues and energies. And the land under his feet flows like mists or long silk scarves. (Look at them, right under his body: like long silk scarves flowing underneath.)
You've speckled this with other animals, and those squat flat-topped trees (I don't know the variety); and a white lion's face in place of a sun. And it creates a mythic, almost fairy tale scene. For finite images with finite dimensions, you manage to evoke timeless myth and folklore...and the detail on this lion---down to the wonderful vortex on his mane (which radiates out into a full head of hair)---is beautiful. Another beautiful piece from you.

I did want to create a feeling of myth, as the white lion is sacred to me and I want to imagine this beautiful creature protected and living forever in a beautiful and safe place, watching over and taking care of all in his kingdom.
