Description
Pocking out of the nose of this A-10 'Warthog' is the front of the General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger. The Avenger is a 30 mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-type auto cannon. It is designed specifically for the anti-tank role, The length of the total gun system is 19-ft 10.5 in (6.06 m), the barrel length is 90.5 in (2.85 m), cartridge size is 30 x 173 mm, rate of fire is 3,900 rpm, and muzzle velocity is 3,324 ft/s (1,010 m/s).
1,200 lb (540 kg) of titanium aircraft armor is used to protect the cockpit and parts of the triple-redundancy flight control system (real triple redundancy not like the one used in the DC-10). The A-10 system has been tested to withstand strikes from 23 mm cannon fire and some strikes from 57 mm rounds. In addition to the cannon the A-10 has 11 hard points, four under each wing and three under the fuselage to carry additional ordinance.
The General Electric TF 34-GF-100 turbofan engines are high mounted to prevent FOD (Foreign Object Damage). My buddy, a retired Force Recon Marine, is holding one of the 30 mm cartridges.
Anyone that has ever seen/heard this aircraft in action is a believer. Fortunately the US Air Force, instead of trying to retire the aircraft, has obtained a contract to replace the wings to extend service life of the aircraft.

Great photo of the Army's favorite Air Force bird. These things are tough! I remember seeing one come back in to King Fahd back in the day trailing a little smoke and with obvious battle damage. Whatever it engaged didn't come out on top. GAU 8, baby!
