(just as a technical note, RR is messing up the zoom function, though it's not been great for a while now...when one zooms this at least on my computer, it gets wayyyyyy too big, to where the image is blurred. So I did a semi zoom, and saw it as I'm sure you intended, with all the detail intact; and it's splendid~) Choosing one image is very hard, as everyone you've posted has called out to me. I chose this for your mastery of the circle form, and the dream catcher spirit. The circle is filled with a drum-head, in its hues and surface. I love those hues, I love the oranges and greens, and the way they mingle like clouds---all in the surface of a dream-catcher 'skin'. That main eagle emerges out of it like a god coming out of a deep cosmic cave. Stunning shape, movement, pose; and detail in every feather and highlight is stunning. Great delineation of the wing tips, love the highlighting around each feather, love the luminous pinks and purples above his head. Love the flame-like feel of his right-most wing. And that fierce eagle's face, as if it's determined to break the speed of light.
And the eagle facing us on the bottom is fierce as the cosmos, making it clear that he represents all eagledom, in all its fierce and all-encompassing power. (Your poem intimates that---some beautiful rhyme there too---as you capture the feeling of soaring to unknown heights just as the eagle's spirit asks you to.) You surround the bottom eagle with feathers, capturing the Native American feel of your image beautifully. (I just love that orange and green moving in and out of itself in the d.catcher...love the paint-like textures too. Feels so "oil" based...
Your background is a big sky, with more painterly clouds and hues; and it's suitably subdued, to allow the massivity of the eagles and circle to dominate. A beautiful sky, with mystery and shadow. Overall, it's a huge emblem piece, a huge celebration of the fierceness and total command of the bird, you've composed it so that central flying eagle absolutely dominates as he bursts through the membrane of the universe. And the background hues of that--what---mango yellow? That deep mango/amber/orange yellow is just one of those hues that speak a world all by themselves. (Gaugin used a similar yellow. It's not a common hue, but boy does it pack a punch.) Terrific, Carol. I'll come back for more when I'm commenting more. Your work hasn't waned despite illness and fatigue. You must need a 10 hour nap after finishing one of these pieces...(and your dreams are probably otherworldly...)
Mark, thanks so much for your very beautiful comment. I'm so glad you are feeling better. I enjoyed working on this eagle artwork because the eagle has a fierceness and strength that inspired me. Most of us don't get to see or experience this magnificent creature up close and that, for me, is the thrill and beauty of art. We get to see things in new ways. And what is even more of a thrill is seeing your vision of my work, which allows me to see it in new ways, too. I also enjoyed playing with color in this work, and you always discover the pinks and purples and mango yellows. Sometimes I think of you when I'm creating and smile because I know you will see and enjoy those unlikely hues. As always your comments and support of my art (and prose, too) give me new insight and inspiration and are always a gift. Be well my friend.
