The entire day during this family get together the kids played in the water or horsed around on the beach, while the adults sat around, chatted and otherwise socialized. On the end of the covered area a Matai (chief) was sitting. He didn't speak, just generally observed. A meal was served for the family members and to the chief, and dancing went on throughout most of the afternoon. Dancing by young girls, young boys, a combination of both. and also by a group of women and by single women, and they all faced the Matai. Toward the end of the afternoon the Matai got up and I realized that he used crotches. When he spoke, the sound and tone of his voice, indicated authority.
