This is the place I had picked to spend a week in Samoa. i did not want to stay in a hotel in Apia, I wanted to be on the beach and I had picked this place from several others, also with the same setup. It was located on the the south coast of Upolu Island, the smaller of the two main islands of Samoa, but the most populous. The capital city of Apia is located on the central north coast, and so is the International Airport. After finding out that there is no Budget office at the airport, I took a taxi to Apia, about 40 km east along the Main West Coast Road. Traffic appeared light, road conditions were ok with many 'Sleeping Policemen', i.e. speed bumps. Once I got dropped off at the ' downtown' Budget office, a very small office, manned by three women, I found out that there were no cars. Why not? This situation reminded me of an episode on 'Seinfeld' where Jerry had made reservations for a car but there was no car. and he argued about the fact why make a reservation then. his point to the rental agent was what are you reserving if not a car? I came at the wrong time of the year. It is now the rainy season, about 18 inches of precipitation in December and another 18 inches or so in January in Apia, slightly less on the south side of the island. The tourist season, if it can be called that, because the place is way too far off the beaten path, is during the Northern Hemisphere summer, the Southern Hemisphere winter when Kiwis and Aussies come north to escape from the cold. So why where there no cars at this time of year? This time of year, over Christmas and New Years, are the summer holidays and many Samoan families, who live abroad, primarily in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, come home for family get-together. Their family members snatch up all the rentals for the duration. The lady at the rental place felt really bad for me, and she made a good point saying "I wish these booking places make sure that there are actually cars available'. She had me driven with one of the girls cars to the place I wanted to go, about a distance of 45-50 km. We took one of the three cross-islands roads, pot-holed from the previous weeks heavy rains, and when we got to where we had to turn off I had to pay a fee to continue - 20 Tala, about 6.- $US.
