Willcox was founded in 1880 as a whistle stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was originally known as 'Maley', but the name was changed in honor of a visit by General Orlando B. Willcox in 1889. In the early 20th century Willcox had the distinction of being a national leader in cattle production. Willcox is also the birthplace of Rex Allen, known as 'The Arizona Cowboy'. My buddy, who is a retired marine, had asked me to come down for the weekend. Last weekend was not only Veteran's Day on November 11, but the day before, on Friday the 10 November was the 242nd birthday of the Marine Corps. My buddy had planned to enter his 1967 Nova into the parade but he wrecked it about a month ago. The 600 some horse power caused something to snap under hard acceleration, and he spun out and hit a wall. But he is from Willcox, and so is his wife, and his wife had her 50th high school graduation this year. Both of their families had ranches, and it was sort of like a home coming.
