Les Sulpiciens forment une société de prêtres diocésains fondée à Paris en 1641 par Jean-Jacques Olier de Verneuil afin de mettre en oeuvre les décisions du concile de Trente (1545-1563) sur la formation du clergé diocésain.
La première fondation est le Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice, à Paris, d'où vient le nom officiel de la Compagnie des prêtres de Saint-Sulpice. Olier peut également compter parmi les fondateurs de la ville de Montréal; en compagnie du serviteur de Dieu, Jérôme le Royer de la Dauversière, il fonde la Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, au nom de laquelle Paul de Chomedey, sieur de MAISONNEUVE, dirige en 1642 l'expédition de fondation de VILLE-MARIE (Montréal).
Arrivés en 1657 et seigneurs de Montréal jusqu'à la Conquête, les Sulpiciens étaient missionnaires et éducateurs en plus de former une partie du clergé (ce qu'ils font encore aujourd'hui) et d'exercer un ministère paroissial et d'autres fonctions pastorales. En 1996, ils comptent 118 membres au Canada (30,5 p. 100 de leur effectif mondial).

The Sulpicians form a society of diocesan priests founded in Paris in 1641 by Jean-Jacques Olier de Verneuil in order to implement the decisions of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) on the formation of the diocesan clergy. The first foundation is the Seminary of Saint Sulpice, in Paris, whence comes the official name of the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice. Olier may also be among the founders of the city of Montreal; in company with the servant of God, Jérôme le Royer de la Dauversiere, he founded Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, in whose name Paul de Chomedey, sieur de MAISONNEUVE, directed the founding expedition of VILLE-MARIE (Montreal, ). Arrived in 1657 and lords of Montreal until the Conquest, the Sulpicians were missionaries and educators in addition to forming a part of the clergy (which they still do today) and to exercise a parochial ministry and other functions pastoral. In 1996, there were 118 members in Canada (30.5 per cent of the global workforce).
