Description
Here is another skink image. This photo was taken in 2008. It is a Broad-headed Skink and is very similar to the Five-lined Skink I posted yesterday. The Five-lined Skink grows to over 8" but this one can grow to over 12" in length and is much chunkier.
The circumstances of catching it are also similar to yesterday's encounter in that I saved it from my cat. Unfortunately it had already lost a large portion of it's tail. This is a defensive technique. Fracture planes in the tail break off when grasped by a predator. The portion that drops off continues to wiggle and thereby provides a distraction for the predator to focus on. This gives the skink an opportunity to escape. It will regrow the lost portion fairly rapidly.

How did you catch it? It must have been running like mad! At least it seems calm in your hand. Feels safe after you rescued it? Nice photo of the not so little critter. Keep up the good work! :-)
