Description
As we were getting closer to Milford Sound we entered the pristine rain forest that covers the West Coast of the southern part of the South Island and is part of the Fjordland National Park. This region has more than 200 rain days and receives anywhere from 5 to 7 m of annual precipitation. This mid-latitude rain forest looks entirely different than its northern counterpart because New Zealand had been completely isolated for millions of years and the flora and fauna are unlike anywhere else.

So interesting to see this, after we've talked about it at some length. Everything looks vaguely familiar, but it's just the similarity of greens and mosses. When I look at each plant and tree a bit longer, none of them look like what I've seen before. Even the ferns have a different pattern from what I'm used to!
@auntietk! The same for me Tara. There are about 80 different types of ferns, some are pretty tall. And I haven't seen any huge leaves like I have seen at Hoh and at the western base of Mt. Rainier.
