Description
Rising mist over the Waikato River at Huntly, our first stop after heading south from Auckland. Across the river at this point used to be a coal-fired power station which is no longer operating. We stopped to buy some wool products such as scarfs and mittens made from merino and/or possum wool.
It was at this time that we heard first about the possum, considered a pest in New Zealand. There were only three land-based mammals in New Zealand when the Europeans arrived. So in the 1850s Australia 'gifted' New Zealand with about 1,500 possums to introduce a fur-bearing animal that can be hunted for fur and also provides meat.
Possums are marsupial, native to Australia, and there are two kinds. The brown possum from Queensland, and the black possum from Tasmania. Most possum brought to New Zealand came from Tasmania, because black fur fetched a higher price.
There was only one problem. Possums multiplied rapidly and by the 1980s there were about 50 to 70 millions in the country. Possums not only destroyed native trees, they also eat bird eggs, the birds themselves, and the nectar, a food source for the birds.
Possums are considered enemy number one in New Zealand and the country declared war on them and is attempting to reduce their numbers. Currently there are an estimated 30 million of them in the country.

The sound like a nightmare animal ! This is a lovely cool view.
It is to them, because there are no natural predators!
A super shot my friend!!
great take
Shining work.
Lovely lake.
Great capture - this sounds like the Emu wars in Australia
Yeah, Australia had their pests, when they put bounties on dingos and rabbits at different times. They still have a 5,000 km long 'dog fence' to keep out keep dingos out of South Australia!
Beautiful view!
how many times has "do gooders" created such huge problems for an other wise ecological balanced environment . just like people that brought their favorite plants on moving to Arizona to escape pollen problems. now Arizona has as much problem as any state
You got that right Richard!
Beautiful lake. I never would have thought of possum as a source of fur, but maybe the Australian possums are different than the American ones.
beautiful !
Amazing capture. God bless.
Lovely photograph. Very well composed, as your photographs invariably are.
