Description
Symonds Street Cemetery is a historic cemetery and park in central Auckland, New Zealand. It is situated in 5.8 hectares of deciduous forest on the western slope of Grafton Gully, by the corner of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road, and is crossed by the Grafton Bridge. The cemetery was established in 1842, one year after Auckland was officially named New Zealand's capital.
The cemetery is named for William Cornwallis Symonds, a British Army officer prominent in the early colonization of New Zealand. It has a Historic Place - Category I listing with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Maintenance and administration of the cemetery is provided by the Auckland Council.
There are 1,200 known graves and an an estimated number of 10,000 interments. Several prominent people from the early days of Auckland were set to rest here. Because of the many deciduous trees and the damp climate it reminded me of Berlin during the fall.

and western Washington and Oregon....
great capture - would this be considered still life?
I have seen many similar cemeteries, usually fenced and and close to an old church in England, Ireland, France, the Northwest of the US and in the East, Pennsylvania, Jersey and other locations.
Definitely a place of historical interest and also one for remembrance of things past .... Thank you for sharing, Sig , and for your enthralling narrative .
It's a pretty place. It looks very peaceful.
The council is doing a great job...those tombstones are as erect and straight as a formation of soldiers on parade.
I love the richness of this shot. It's compelling! I'm looking at everything, but will just dip in for a comment here and there. Don't think I've abandoned you! LOL!
