Description
Wenden in La Paz County, Arizona is located along highway US 60 five miles east of Salome. Wenden was established in 1905, is unincorporated and, according to the Census Designated Place (CDP) has an area of 14.9 square miles and a population of 556 in 2000.
In this town is the turn-off to Alamo Lake, a reservoir along Bill Williams River about 40 miles distance. Wenden is located along the Centennial Wash which originates in the nearby Harcuvar Mountains. The normally dry Wash experienced two devastating 100 year floods in 2000 and 2010 forcing the population of Wenden to relocate to Salome.
As with other small communities along US 60 in this part of Arizona, the economy is based on tourism (Winter visitors) and agriculture. Crops grown in this area include melons, garbanzo beans, alfalfa, pistachios, wheat and cotton.
About 50% of the community lives below the poverty level.
