Description
This may be my favorite memorial on/near the National Mall. The memorial is dedicated to all soldiers, airmen, Marines and sailors who served during the Korean War (1950-1953).
The statues are larger than life, each over seven feet tall and weighing nearly 1000 pounds. They appear to be searching in all directions for imminent danger.
The memorial is in the form of a triangle intersecting a circle. The wall on one side of the memorial is 164 feet (50m) long and made from more than 100 tons of highly polished "Academy Black" granite with more than 2,500 photographic, archival images representing the land, sea and air troops who supported those who fought in the war. The images are sandblasted onto the wall.
The nineteen figures are made from stainless steel (I know they don't look like it) and represent a platoon on patrol. They are drawn from each branch of the armed forces; fourteen figures from the Army, three from the Marine Corps, one is a Navy Corpsman, and one is an Air Force Forward Air Observer. They are dressed in full combat gear, dispersed among strips of granite and juniper bushes which represent the rugged terrain of Korea.

Very nice capture and interesting information Bill.
Beautiful series of picture that well give the idea of the situation of a moment of a war !!
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
Beautiful, what a lovely memorial to the armed forces.
What a wonderful tribute and memorial!
I've seen photos and have read about it. The sand blasted images were almost spooky in the photo I saw. A very fitting memorial. Unfortunately we may see another memorial soon if the tensions in the region are not resolved. I certainly hope for peace. The South Korean consul in San Francisco and his family was our next door neighbor in the 1980s. SO very kind and polite people. A pity politics should mar that country. Keep up the good work, Bill. If you have more photos of this, please post. It's so "in the time". :-)
One of my favorites too!! Great capture Bill!!
I particularly like the view from the back of the monument. You've made us feel like we're part of the patrol. A terrific collection of shots, and I'm pretty happy that the pictures I got aren't these, and I'll still have something to show! :)
A fantastic and moving set of images. When I was in D.C. in 1990 there was nothing. It was known as the forgotten war. Nice to see our men and women have finally received some recognition.
beautiful presentation
Wonderful photos, Bill, and what a beautiful memorial for those who served in that war.
