Description
The USS Arizona Memorial was established on May 30, 1962. It marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 Sailors and Marines killed on the USS Arizona (BB39) during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and commemorates the events of that day.
The Memorial straddles the sunken hull of the battleship without touching it. As survivors of the attack on the Arizona pass away, many choose either to have their ashes scattered in the water over the ship, or to have their urns placed within the well of the barbette of turret No. 4.
Every United States Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine vessel entering Pearl Harbor participates in the tradition of 'Manning the Rails'. Personnel serving on these ships stand at attention at the ship's guard rails and salute the USS Arizona Memorial in solemn fashion as their ship glides into port.
This picture was taken from the Arizona Memorial and shows part of the USS Arizona hull, along with an oily sheen on the surface of the water from the oil that is still seeping from the hull since December 7, 1941 at a rate of approximately one quart per day.
This picture was taken in March 1993 and is scanned, Sig...

A fine place to remember the sacrifice of our service men at Pearl Harbor.
I've always wondered what the large, flat round plate is. Beyond is a large square opening. Also a big ? in my mind. Keep up the good work and thanks for the informative text, particularly for those who don't know. :-)
