Description
Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious assault ship: a large floating target stuffed full of assault troops who use helicopters and landing craft discharged from the built in dock via a huge-mongous tail gate.
Marjorie McAllister is busy helping to shove the IWO against the dock. I believe there were five tugs performing this operation. I am still impressed by the height of the flight deck above the surface as well as that cavernous opening for the deck-edge elevator. This was an impressive vessel to find upon leaving an equally impressive vessel. The size of the island is equally amazing.
(We asked about the flags being at half-mast and were told that they were lowered to honor an NYC police officer.)
Heyyyyyy. I think I spotted some un-sailorly behavior up there. Time to zoom in some more.

Nice capture of the entire bridge section. Interesting with the double ends for air traffic control at each end of the ship. Good job capturing so much detail. We really get to see where our defense tax dollars go. Keep up the good work. :-)

I highly recommend it. Get there early and take your time. We rushed a bit more than was optimal. Great collection of flying things on the flight deck. Did not take in the shuttle exhibit, but that was to save time for more stuff.
