A prickly beauty. Your image of contrasts brings to mind one of my favorite quotes: “Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.”
Yes, a very fine find...but it's probably as much your zeroing-in eye as anything, as you find these things instinctually. Love the contrast of the flower with the prickly cactus below and all around. And the pinks next to those deep greens. There's a tad of softness, which softens the intrusion of the needles. And it's a crowded shot, cropped to bring out the intensity of it, like the flowers better watch out, because those needles could stab them any minute. Intense and beautiful shot, Tara: I really don't think you have to worry about making "cliched" shots of Washington DC: Just follow your eye, and you'll get shots that no one else thought of. (And a perfect connection to that old song; my mother had the album this came from. I don't remember this song---though the lyrics are very funny, and date back to the 30s (I think they were originally sung by F.Astaire, and---from the video you linked---were altered somewhat by Fitzgerald and Armstrong)---but the two of them together were great.)
