Description
Two years ago I had meant to go to the BMW Museum in Munich, but I was talked into going to the Verkehrsmuseum in Munich instead. The Verkehrsmuseum in Munich is one of the best, if not the best of its kind in Germany. This time I was determined to visit the BMW Museum in Munich.
The reason for that was that when I was a kid I listened to my dad telling me war stories, about his experiences in the war, WW!!. My dad was a Oberfeldwebel (a corporal, I think) in the motor pool of Hitler's Hauptquartier, Hitler's headquarters. He drove mostly all sorts of trucks but also occasionally a Kuebelwagen, and often a Mercedes or a BWM when he drove a colonel. And it were the stories about those two cars, I never got enough of.. About their characteristics, handling and performance. Being attached to the headquarters he went all over Russia where the Germans had occupied it, but never that close to the front, after all the big wigs had to be kept at a save distance from the actual action.
I have a picture of him posing with the Mercedes (and I think I posted it some years ago on rendo), but I have no picture of the BMW.
When he told me those stories, in the late 40's, there were no cars in Germany. After the war the BMW factory wound up in the Eastern sector of Germany, what became the DDR, and no cars were built. What I didn't know at the time, was that the BMWs had made a name for themselves in racing in 1937, 1938, and 1939 in the 2 liter class. I just know that my dad always concluded that he liked driven the BMW better than the Mercedes.
In the mid 50s BMW started to marked the BMW Isetta, and in the late 50s, they brought out the 502 and the 507. The 507, a 3.8 liter V8 sports car, was meant to compete with the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, but it was expensive and almost bankrupted BMW..
Eventually BMW became know for sports cars and performance cars. I remember when I saw my first 1993 325 in Seville, Spain and was blown away by its looks. Little did I know that less than a year later I bought my first 325.
Anyway, I had never seen a 1938 BMW 328 in the flesh so to speak, and I wanted to see the 1939 BMW 328 my dad liked to drive and Heike, my cousin Gundi's daughter-in-law came with me. When I saw this car, I could understand while my dad so liked it. Its sports car heritage and the looks, for a 1939 car were just phenomenal. My dad at the time was in his early thirties and I could see why he liked to drive it.
