Description

Since 31 July 2010, the cathedral and the episcopal city of Albi have been listed on the Unesco World Heritage List. The construction of this cathedral lasted from 1282 to 1480. The region had been devastated by the crusades against the Cathars, who believed that religion should be lived in poverty, unlike the Catholic church that displayed splendor and wealth. It is these reasons that led the architects to create a brick cathedral, a traditional material in this region and not very expensive. The aim was also to show the sanctuary protected by thick walls.

Fascinating info and what a great framing through the alley, JC. What an interesting design with those narrow window slits and I love all these brick buildings in the foreground. Just look at all the stories those bricks tell with all the repairs done to them, huh? Awesome shot, my friend! Feels like I'm walking down the street with ya'.

Nice view of the cathedral framed by the shadowed alleyway. I learned about the Cathars on a trip through the Dordogne a few years ago - they suffered horrible persecution at the hands of the Catholic church...

I've seen plenty of brick churches, but this is the first brick cathedral I've seen. 198 years to build this? How big is the place?
