they live more than a day, because they must mate and drop their eggs in the water, but they do not eat when being an imago; see my comment on the other upload for more info

Splendid how you captured the mass of the fly, with its long extended 'tail' going down to the bottom of the shot, with the grace of ballet. And such complexity in the wings and body. The stalk of leaves is the perfect contrast for the photograph. Also, he's captured against what I assume is water, which is a sweet break in the greenery. A very sweet capture of a beautiful creature, shown in context where it's long lines make such a nice calligraphic journey across the page. I wonder if creatures like this, when being told they have but 'one day', look up and say, "pardon me???" It's one of the thefts of nature. A very sensitive shot.
(I've whooped it up for Saul Steinberg before, but I love his take on things. He did a series of drawings of insects, with their rickety tinker-toy structures and exotic lacy forms. But there are only 1 or 2 on the web. Here are two I could find---not the best: The second one, the guy's bent to our left, peering at the sheer plethora of these creatures. ((I didn't notice his form right away, which is why I told you.)) The last one is birds, but Steinberg gets the same idea---plethora, repetition, etc. I wish there were more of these online...zoom on the first one:
