Description
Zantedeschia aethiopica (calla lily, arum lily) is such a graceful bloom. I love the swirl, the dripping tip, the asymmetrical form. There were loads of these along the Pacific coast. They seemed to be a favorite of gardeners in Oregon and Northern California. These were in the Japanese garden at Shore Acres, and seemed to be a bit more refined than their wilder brethren.
The last few days on the road always seem so hectic. We get to be like horses headed to the barn, and just want to GO! Yesterday we were in Port Townsend, Washington, having camped in a wonderful park just off the beach the night before. In a perfect world we would have packed up and meandered down to the ferry dock to catch the 12:30pm sailing. Unfortunately, they cancelled two boats due to extra-low tides, and we couldn't get a reservation for anything earlier than the 5:15pm boat. So we packed up and moved the motorhome to a grassy field they said was okay to park in, and waited there until it was time to head for the dock. Once we got on the ferry it was an easy trip, but we didn't pull into our campsite here at home until after 7:00pm. (If we had been on the 12:30 boat we would have been home by 2:00 or 2:30pm.)
So today we got mostly settled in, and tomorrow we'll finish getting all set up for the summer. Lawn chairs set up, porch swing re-assembled, awning out, and we'll be ready to relax!
Tomorrow is my birthday, so I'm going to get Bill to fix me breakfast and remind him to spoil me all day. :P
It's good to be back home in Washington! :) We miss it here the whole time we're in Texas, but now that we're here, I'll miss my friends down south all summer long! It's a funny sort of life, but we're enjoying it.

This is sublime. There are calla lillies all over around here and I just love them.
I don't travel quite the same way you and Bill do, but I know exactly what you mean about being home and being away. Welcome home and enjoy your summer. Oh, and of course---Happy Birthday!!!

I am glad you had a great trip and that you made it back safe and sound for your birthday. I hope you enjoy the day tomorrow with all that pampering. Interesting about the ferries being canceled due to the low tides. I have seen them canceled for other reasons plenty of times (my dad lived in the San Juan islands for many years), but extra low tides is a first for me.

Sultry beauty! This reminds me of D H Lawrence's book Sons and Lovers in which white flowers at dusk play such a symbolic role in Mrs. Morel's emotional life. I can't remember exactly what they symbolised but as all of Lawrence is characterized by pounding blood, pouring sweat or panting sex, it is probably the latter!
(Don't let this generalization detract from the effect of this gorgeous photo, but do read the book if you haven't already, it was his third and probably the best.)
As always you have used the light here to compose an amazingly beautiful photo. These lilies remind me of an elegant wedding gown, free if frills and lace.

We're taking a trip to Washington state next month that involves a ferry ride from Port Angeles to Whidbey Island & now you've got me thinking that we may need to have contingency plans in case we run into a similar low tide situation...

I'm back in May!!! I'm sorry I can't comment on everything, but the length of my comments (and my very slow speed at writing them---I have to edit them too, which takes time ((if I don't edit, they'll read like gibberish: I'm not talkin' 'literary' editing, I'm talkin' putting in the right verbs, cleaning it up, etc, as my first efforts at a comment are like steam of consciousness))) prohibits me from leaving comments on everything. So I'm skipping.
It looks like you used some kind of softening, and then brought out real detail as well---it's stunning. The tops of the flowers are soft as cashmere, but the under-petals have wonderful clear lines. And they're lined up, in you photo, like a procession, where each flower is checking out the world around it. THe background is a wonderful muted purple; and the leaves against it are dreams. You have an angle here, which is followed by everything: Great seeing, angling, postwork, all of it---a beautiful shot. And I'd comment on your description, but we've already talked about that. I'm glad you got home, and had a fine summer...
