Description
This man is walking along Sarandi, Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo, Uruguay while drinking mate. Mate is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, the Bolivian Chaco and Southern Brazil. It is prepared by steeping dried leaves of yerba mate in hot water and is served with a metal straw from a hollow calabash gord. The straw is called a bombilla in Spanish and is traditionally made of silver.
I have only once seen someone drink mate before. Three years prior to this occasion when a shop keeper in Esquel, in the Argentine Lake District, was drinking it in his store.
Here in Montevideo it was pretty common to drink it in the morning while waiting for the bus or walking to work. To assure refills, each person usually carried a thermos with hot water under their arm.

Fascinating! I was brought up never to eat or drink in the street and I still find the sight unpleasant!
Great photo and info. I have heard of mate, but never really knew what it was.
Thanks, Sig. I always wondered what the guy was selling on the beach at Rio in a movie I saw. Is it pronounced "mah-tchah" ?
@Buffalo1! Yes!
excellent capture
great shot
Great photo and background info. Should I find myself in S. America I would try it.
I have had mate many years ago when it was popular as a coffee substitute in the health food hippie crowd I was hanging around with. Never with a metal straw, though, just steeped in a coffee mug with boiling water. It was quite good.
