Description

In 1937 Mercedes-Benz developed a new racing car, the W 125. It was one of the fastest & most powerful grand prix cars manufactured. It reached the tremendous speed of 193 mph on the SPA circuit. The results list for the 1937 season testify to the almost total dominance of the W 125: Victories in the Grand Prix in Tripoli and the Avus Race, double victories in the Grands Prix in Germany, Italy and Brinn, triple victories in the Grands Prix in Monaco and Switzerland. The W125 was considered the most powerful race car ever for about 3 decades, until large capacity US-built V8 engines in CanAm sportcars reached similar power in the mid 1960s. Somewhere in that decade, and the following, this 125 became a “Rat Rod”. It’s last owner had transformed it into a dragster and when it’s quarter mile glory days were over, it was unceremoniously left abandoned in a warehouse waiting for restoration…

Great history lesson, excellent model and superbly presented. Pity I didn't see it in the Mercedes museum at Stuttgart a few years ago.
