Description
One of the large, lavishly decorated interior spaces in the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest. The guided tour of the building was very interesting & I'd definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Budapest. There was one incredible room inside the dome of the building that I would have loved to get a photo of, but it was the one room where photography was strictly forbidden. In the middle of the room was a glass case that housed the Holy Crown of Hungary (also known as the Crown of St. Stephen), which dates back to the 11th or 12th century. The crown was given to the U.S. during World War II for safekeeping to keep it out of the hands of either the Nazis or Soviets & Jimmy Carter returned it to the Hungarian people in 1978. It was guarded by two soldiers who go through a ritual with their swords every 15 minutes & we were warned to stand clear of them to avoid being impaled...
