Hi all,
I am still experimenting with my new camera (Fugi Finepix s9900W). It is a bridge camera with a 50x zoom and 16Mp CMOS sensor. I am pretty sure that this is a female Red-bellied Woodpecker (Centurus carolinus), but I could easily be mistaken about species and gender, lol.
I was feeding the new dog and heard birds chattering. It took me a moment to locate them. They were in a tree about 80’ away. It took me a little time to locate them on the LCD screen with the zoom at max, I had to focus on the bird at no zoom and then zoom out while keeping it in focus. I also had to brace against a pole to reduce camera shake (which at full zoom is very noticeable) and I was quite happy about getting a savable shot. Not an award winner I know but I have never been able to get a usable shot of a bird this size (8-9” ) at such a distance before.

beautiful pecker
Nice shot. I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ70, which has a 60x zoom & have used it for bird photography (including woodpeckers) as well. I can relate to the challenge of locating & focusing on a bird in a tree a good distance away. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but I agree it's worth the effort to get closeups like this. I have found, though, that it's much easier for me to use the viewfinder rather than the LCD screen for these types of shots...
