Description
Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, located 3 miles west of Cheyenne, Wyoming is one of three Strategic Missile Bases in the United States. Warren AFB is home of the 90th Missile Wing (MW) assigned to the 20th Air Force. The 90th MW operates the LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBM, with launch facilities in Southeast Wyoming, Western Nebraska, and Northern Colorado.
Warren AFB is the oldest continuously active military installation within the Air Force, established in 1867 by the United States Army as Fort Davis Allen Russell. This fort was one of several forts established by the Army to protect the soon to be completed Transcontinental Railroad.
Fort Russell served as the home for the 1st US Cavalry and the 23rd US Infantry Regiments and these homes were built in 1867 to house these regiments. Today some of these buildings serve as Officer Quarters and their families, some are used for administrative purposes and some for lodging. All of them are on the National Register of Historic Places (USAF 1977).
These buildings are arranged around a large open area, which must have been the parade ground in the early days. The atmosphere is so serene, that deer graze unperturbed in the open spaces and owls hoot in the trees at night.
The majority of the personnel stationed here lives in modern housing scattered elsewhere on the base.. Warren AFB came under United States Army Air Force control on 1 June 1947 and under the control of the United States Air Force (USAF) respectively on 18 September 1947.

beautiful capture Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Happy Holidays!!
We were going to stay there for a few nights on our way to Texas, but it didn't work out. We were just up in Torrington, so it wasn't too far away, but I think there was something about a road being closed, and we couldn't get in the front gate with the motorhome. Thanks for sharing this picture! I wanted to see it for myself, but maybe next time.
These old forts/modern bases have some lovely building from past times. I am delighted to see them in use and pleased you took such a wonderful photograph!
