For many thousands of years, the surface elves of Faerun held stewardship over the vast Cormanthor; raising the great city of song, Myth Drannor, and guarding the heartlands against the intrusion of evil forces, especially those of the covetous drow, their own dark cousins. Even with the coming of man, the elves sought peace, establishing the Dale Pact and erecting the Standing Stone as a reminder of the promises made by both races. Then the Retreat called the elves westward, home to Evermeet, far out into the Sea of Swords, and left the forest and dalelands in the care of men.
With the ancient magic of the elves fading as they departed, and the Times of Trouble, when the gods where cast down to live as mortals, leaving many twisted and failing, the drow rose from their exile to the Underdark, storming through portals and sneaking up unguarded passages to infest the woodlands; laying claim to the abandoned Elven Court and reigning havoc upon the unprepared dalesmen.
With Cormyr to the south in disarray following the death of king Azoun, the interdimensional city of Shade appearing in the Anauroch desert to the west, Zhentil Keep and Hillsfar to the north vying for control of trade around the Moonsea and the merchant princess of Sembia always on alert for new avenues for profit, the dalelands seem besieged on all sides, with no one to unit them in a common effort to turn back the tide of darkness threatening to overwhelm them.
