Description
Exposed rock at the top of Steptoe Butte. This rock is about 400 million years old, in contrast to the surrounding landscape, which ranges from 7 to 15 million years old.
If we had a genre for geology I'd use that, but "Abstract" will do.

We're packing the car this morning and getting ready to take a little road trip to Louisiana! We've got at least three museum stops planned, as well as a visit with Jock (jocko500). Our turnaround point will be spending several days with some dearly loved and sorely missed friends who live near Hammond, Louisiana. Then we'll turn around and come back!

A prime example of missing what is at your feet. I was so busy looking at the distant hills I didn't notice what I was walking on. I like your perspective. Although the plant matter gives it away, this does look as though it was taken from a higher elevation. Nice collection of textures and colors.

tara, this is one of your most beautiful nature abstracts. Let me remind you that 'abstract' originally meant to "draw out," ie, to draw out essences (to "abstract" something), so this is an abstract in both senses; it draws out essences from these rocks. A gorgeous rich closeup of mineral rich rocks, many hues, veins, soot, soil, smaller rocks, etc. I too don't know the scale; but if it's large, is still looks miniature, like a whole little universe in there. And if it's small, it still looks looming. That's the power of this shot. And the black (shadow) area in the left corner is perfect to complete your abstract: That blackness allows the rest of the shot to shine. Amazing how one can picture a high cliff on the upper right: Scale is just so variable in this shot! And that's only one of its strengths. You've done many "excerpt" shots of nature; and they're all beautiful; but this seems to sum up the whole endeavor---not because it's better than the others, but that it's so archetypal, it's just the 'essence' of what you do with excerpts. I looked at the wiki article, and I still haven't figured out what the scale it---but it doesn't matter: It's beautiful and complete in its own right. A great abstract. Bravo.

What a wonderful shot, Tara! This kind of stuff is so fascinating to me - I shoulda been a geologist... This looks like a big vein of quartz with all the colors. And it almost seems to have the subsurface scattering of quartz. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.
Be sure to give Jock a big hug from the TNA Girls! I'd love to meet him and see his paintings in person.
