yes, it definitely has the presence of an 80's abstract, even early 20th C. Almost Mark Rothko, with his layered rectangles---not hard to see that here. But anyone who's been to Yellowstone will recognize the steaming scene as well. I love that you got the steam on the uppermost layer of water, allowing that mineral rich lower layer to stand out in all its 'brownness'. The lowest level---land, I presume---is the proper frame to the piece, and it's echoed very mutely on the top. A true abstract, layered and finely contrasted, and perfectly cropped for its abstract qualities. It's great that you're still exploring the visual language of that Wyoming trip: That landscape is something out of a picture book...and it's nice to see you posting after a few days, too!!!

I can see this as a tapestry or transferred to a silk scarf. It is a marvelous composition in four parts with the dark blue giving way to the chocolate brown and anchored at either end by different colors. Nice find and great work.

Mark has beaten me to it with the mention of Rothko, which was who sprang to mind as soon as I saw the thumb! Only this is far more interesting and beautiful!

Steam. It could also be fog if in another location. The contrast steam and under water view is great! It looks like there's lava flowing under the water's surface. Nice how you captured both sides of the water's surface. Keep up the good work! :-)

I like the visual ambiguity of this, Tara - it can be seen as either three dimensional or two dimensional, as those who have compared it to a rug or wall hanging or Rothko have suggested. Having visited Yellowstone fairly recently, I find it fascinating to see how you have interpreted it photographically in a very different way than I did. You have a very unique way of seeing things & I like that.

BTW, though I see why Mark compared this to a Rothko, I am not at all a fan of Rothko or really any of the abstract expressionists, with the exceptions of Arshile Gorky & Jackson Pollock. I understand their place in art history & why they painted the way they did - it's just not something I find visually or emotionally appealing. For a brief time (while I was in my twenties), I worked as a silkscreen printer (really just a squeegee puller) for a NY company that printed limited editions silkscreens for well known artists - most of them were either abstract expressionists or pop artists. The artists would come by to check out & approve (or occasionally, reject) the prints we made & I remember artists like Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol & Robert Indiana stopping by. Neither style was one I ever really appreciated, but I remember de Kooning as a gentle, humble presence & the pop guys as egotistical jerks.
