Front row, fourth from the left is my great uncle, Joseph Cattey. Four citations including one in the order of the division. Died in 1985. A miracle, given that the 172nd Fortress Regiment of Belfort, has lost half of its men between 1914 and 1916.

This is the best way to remember them, by their photographs. They thus become what they were - real people, individuals placed together and sent out to a nasty reality. Here, in their clean parade uniforms, later, in the mud of the battlefield. How many of the persons in this photograph survived the horror? How many were wounded? How many never came home? Good job posting this! Keep up the good work! :-)
