When we lived in Phoenix, every summer we'd drive to southern California to the beach. Usually we'd go thru Blythe, but a couple of times we had to detour thru Indio. Mostly I remember the date palms and the heat. There weren't 99 cent stores then, but if there were, I'm sure we would have stopped! Nice shot, and so right on!!

Almost iconic, this could be most anywhere in Los Angeles these days. In Mexico there is a state and a city called Puebla. The name given to people from that state is "poblano". So, La Poblanita is the little woman from Puebla.

Great shot Tara. I would have guessed you took it somewhere in Southern Texas, maybe Brownsville. Talking about heat - today was 111F officially. A buddy of mine's dad took a couple of dogs for walk about a month ago and he fell. He couldn't get up until someone helped him and he got second degree burns on his hands and knees. After 40+ years in Arizona I learned to deal with this heat - I stay inside during the day.

Only 85! Good Heavens! I have to be somewhere where I can be outside in daylight. I do love the way the sun bleaches stuff, though, part of my seaside habitat. There ie a present fashion for 'Shabby Chic' which uses these colours.

That would just be too hot for me and now the News tells us they have wild fires in California.

To hot for me I'd wilt.

I really like this shot. It reminds me of my childhood, where many streets and buildings were left to get old. There were more important things to care about at that time, than the look of the front building. They had their "patina" from weather and age. It had its own charme, or was I just a happy kid and saw everything in another light? Dont know. I still do like the things that are less over decorated. Must be the Nostalgia again.

Was wondering what Mark was talking about...then I zoomed and see it, "La Poblanita"... This makes for a very thoughtful piece. Gives me a lot to think about anyway:-)

I've been through that whole desert region a lot, as we spent summers at Lake Havasu and did that drive from Long Beach to the desert many many weekends. The best memories were stopping in Indio for date shakes -- nothing richer, it can be difficult to finish one! But sweet and oh so good...imagine, if you will, a four door sedan with two adults and five children crammed in, making that five-hour drive with NO AIR CONDITIONING through the desert! Sweat much? The only thing that kept us going was knowing that at the end of the drive was the lake and all the swimming we wanted. I guess this hot and faded spot brought back a whole acre of memories, eh?

Reminds me Mexico when I was young :)

We have become so accustomed to our air conditioning, it would be hard for most of us to endure an environment such as this... When our power got knocked out for 3 days back at the beginning of July, it barely made it into the low 90s during the day, and the low 80s - high 70s at night. We were sleeping with wet towels draped over our legs arms and heads to keep cool. A great, and hot photo, Tara!

I love the plain candor of the capture. People, doing everything, are fascinating.
